If you want nice bokeh in the background when you ake a picture, you need to set your camera to a low F-number (wide iris). This means that there is a shallow depth of field. In this picture the bell is sharp but both the handle and the background are out of focus. If you set your f-number to a high number (narrow iris), you will get more detail in your picture but it will be less dreamy.
A focus point on your camera is nothing more than determining exactly how far away the lens needs to focus. If your camera focuses on multiple points, this simply means that these points are evenly far away from the camera.
