Italy possesses a large array of native grape varieties, producing a wide array of different Italian wines. Under the Italian appellation system of Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG), each Italian wine region has certain grape varieties that are authorized for wine production in that region. Wines produced from grapes outside of the authorized list are not permitted to use a DOC/G on the wine label may be potentially produced under the more inclusive Indicazione geografica tipica (IGT) designation (such as the case with many “Super Tuscans”) or as simple table wine (vino da tavola) (wikipedia).
